I am surprised at how far it was into the new Netflix docuseries “Break Point” before a portable percussive massager first appeared. Since so many professional players featured on the show have full-time physios on their teams, you might not think they also use this device, but they do.

Late in Season 1, Episode 4 of the show, an unknown player is seen and heard using a Theragun Mini percussive massager. In a failed attempt to figure out who it was, I reviewed the episode twice, trying to figure out which player was wearing the bracelet seen in the video clip. I feel like it may have been Jessica Pegula, but that is really just a guess.

I own a much larger model of the Theragun and have been delighted with the device. Additionally, one of my teammates brought a Theragun Mini to the Intersectionals tournament last week. It was a timely opportunity to compare the smaller form factor with the much larger (and more expensive) full-size model. I would most likely go with the mini if I purchased one today.

Portable percussive massagers, sometimes colloquially referred to as massage guns, have become immensely popular not only in tennis but also in other sports as well. The device effectively reduces muscle soreness and stiffness associated with training and competing in tennis. The percussive action provides deep tissue massage, promotes blood circulation, and accelerates recovery.

Tennis players often experience tightness in muscles and fascia. Percussive massagers can aid in myofascial release, breaking up knots and adhesions in the soft tissue and improving flexibility and range of motion. It can alleviate stiffness and pain that interferes with peak performance.

Portable percussive massagers are compact and easy to carry, making them convenient to use anywhere. The device can be used at home or in the gym to enhance and recover from training. During competition, a percussive massager can relieve muscle tightness and discomfort. It could make a difference in a match.

The Theragun Mini Massage Gun is an investment in well-being and peak performance for serious tennis players. It is an effective way to prime your muscles to play your best. Professional tennis players use it and so should you.
