The Netflix Series “Break Point” has turned out to be a rich source of tennis training techniques that made brief appearances in the show. In fact, some of the glimpses are so short that it was inevitable that I would miss one along the way. Last week, it was called to my attention that I inadvertently skipped a yoga pose that came immediately before the montage of Maria Sakkari doing insane things. Consequently, a little backtracking is required.

In S1E3, which is set at the BNP Paribas at Indian Wells, Paola Badosa is seen performing an exercise that is a variation of the Warrior 3 yoga pose. Yoga is great for tennis players because it works on physical and mental elements crucial to high on-court performance. Warrior 3 focuses on balance, strength, and stability. It engages the core and works the muscles in the legs and ankles.

Warrior 3 is performed in a standing position. The pose requires balancing on one leg while extending the other leg straight behind the body. In the classic variation, the arms are extended forward, parallel to the ground, creating a straight line from the fingertips to the extended back leg. In this particular clip from the show, Badosa is performing the exercise while holding her arms at her sides. This pose can also be done with prayer hands.

Since Badosa is wearing her match kit and has her racquet bag at her feet, I believe that the clip was immediately before the walkout for one of her matches. That is appropriate because the pose is also good for concentration and relaxation Focusing on one spot while in the pose and concentrating on the breath is recommended. Consequently, Warrior 3 can contribute to a calm mind in addition to the benefits for movement, agility, and balance.

This concludes our temporary respite of tranquility. Next week we’re heading straight back to the gym for the badass exhibition that is Maria Sakkari. In the meantime, if you’re not incorporating Warrior 3 into your workout, you should give it a try.
