For the past few months, I have been sharing tennis training techniques gleaned from last season’s Netflix docuseries ‘Break Point.” We have now reached the point in the first season where the storyline has advanced to the hallowed grounds of the All-England Club. Episode 6 of the show includes a lot of aerial panoramic footage of Wimbledon, which is beautiful and visually appealing.

Today, I am focusing on a piece of training equipment that appeared in Episode 6 but actually wasn’t being used at the time. A foam roller was seen alongside Ajla Tomljanović. Though she wasn’t seen using it, the proximity suggests that she did so immediately before or after that clip was shown.

The foam roller is an indispensable tool used for self-myofascial release. When used regularly, it can enhance flexibility, improve mobility, and speed up recovery. The physical demands of tennis often lead to tight muscles and potential strain injuries. The foam roller helps players address those issues. It is also a vital component of warm-up and cool-down.

The appearance of the foam roller on this show is the perfect opportunity to share a version of the device that I saw for the first time last year at Intersectionals. One of my teammates had a collapsible foam roller, so I had a chance to try it out. You need to check out this amazing innovation.

While foam rollers are relatively light, they can be awkward to pack in luggage due to their size and bulk. An ingenious mechanism allows this model to transition from flat to perfectly round and rigid with the pull of a cord. I found it to be just as sturdy as a standard foam roller. This collapsible form factor is currently on my wish list.

A foam roller is an important tool for optimizing performance on the court and safeguarding the body from the demands of our sport. Tennis players who don’t regularly use a foam roller are flirting with potential injury. For road warriors, this collapsible foam roller may be exactly what is needed.
