Video is an essential tool in tennis development. The first time I ever saw video of myself playing tennis was at Newk’s Tennis Ranch when I was a young junior. The video camera was the size of an airline carry-on bag and was mounted on a heavy tripod. The playback equipment was also the size of a small suitcase. The image played on the TV was jittery and grainy.
I have no recollection of the first time that a tennis racquet was thrust into my hand. However, I do recall the exact point in time that a tennis racquet came into my life. It unceremoniously appeared in the front seat of the family station wagon one afternoon as my mom retrieved me and my brother from my Grandparents.
The USTA quietly published a spreadsheet listing the confirmed 2021 National level tournaments for adults earlier this week. The file attributes indicate that the spreadsheet was created on 20 October and last updated 23 October. That is about as close to “hot off the press” that this site will ever get.
Non-profit organizations are required to file IRS Form 990 every year which is open to public inspection. USTA National, USTA Texas, and all of the CTAs are independent non-profit organizations. As such, they are required to file Form 990 with the IRS. They are also required to make these forms available for public examination. Hey, that’s me!

It is striking to step back and realize that only tennis tournament activity that is going on right now in my geographic region is under the banner of UTR and other events that are not sanctioned by the USTA. There is a very obvious explanation for this. At the onset of the COVID-19 crisis the USTA National Office suspended play tournaments as well as other events such as leagues and team tennis. UTR never suspended play. But why?

Next up in the discussion of how to lose a point is throwing a racquet. The first image that springs to mind for me is a racquet abuse code violation, but this is an entirely different scenario. The point is lost if the ball in play touches the racket when the player is not holding it.

In a nutshell, the Fast4 Format consists of “Short” sets, where the winner of each set is the first to win 4 games. A tie-break game is played if the score reaches 3-3 or 4-4 “at the discretion of the sanctioning body.” The decision of the game count when the tie-break should be played seems to be roughly 50-50 in actual usage across events.
