If nothing else, the Netflix docuseries “Break Point” convincingly illustrates how pervasive resistance bands are as a part of pre-match muscle activation for the top professional tennis players. While Episode 2 of Season 2 focuses on Holger Rune, a quarter-final match-up against Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Italian Open also provided a glimpse into the pre-match preparation of the higher-profile player who didn’t grant inside access to the Netflix filming crews.

Djokovic is seen using resistance bands and high-intensity rapid movements.

Using resistance bands to improve strength and flexibility generally prescribes slow and controlled motion. This is not what we are seeing here. This particular repetitive movement with the resistance bands activates the muscles and increases blood flow. It enhances peak performance while reducing the risk of injury.

Djokovic is again shown using resistance bands as a muscle activation mechanism in a separate clip during this episode. While it was sequenced to appear immediately before the quarterfinal match against Rune, Djokovic is wearing blue rather than red. That is a pretty big clue that it was most likely prior to a practice session earlier in the tournament.

Tennis players at all levels should incorporate resistance bands into their training routines to enhance their performance and reduce the risk of injury.
