Daniel Nestor is a retired Canadian tennis player who was known mostly for doubles. He ended his 18 year professional tennis career in 2018. In 2010, Nestor was the subject of a Tennis Channel “Bag Check” segment. The contents of his tennis racquet bag were eclipsed by an appearance of his (then) infant daughter and a tour of her diaper bag. Still, there was one subtly useful item for recreational tennis players.

Nestor pulled out a container of hair gel from his racquet bag. After recently learning that the ATP has a rule requiring players to remove their hats for the awards ceremony, I now suspect that a lot of the guys are carrying hair care essentials onto the court at least for the Finals. “Reilly Opelka Fined. Again.” summarizes the requirement imposed by the ATP.

I do not carry hair gel in my tennis bag. However, I do carry a comb and a travel size container of dry shampoo. For my long hair, I have discovered that a combination wide and narrow tooth comb eliminates the need for a brush. Dry shampoo is great for removing moisture from the hair for those times when we head straight from the courts to a restaurant and I want to remove my hat.

I skipped over Nestor’s “Bag Check” video when I initially screened it as a potential source of gear for a post on this site. At first glance, I didn’t see anything of use to non-professional players, or really… anyone. I circled back after realizing that hair care is an essential off-court need for tennis players.

Chances are, other players are carrying personal hygiene essentials already. If not, it’s a good idea.
