Every year, just before Wimbledon rolls around, I typically preview many of the tournament’s greatest traditions. Unfortunately, the current fortnight snuck up on me and I failed to cover my usual topics. To correct that oversight, I am kicking off a “better late than never” weekend, starting out with the tournament’s iconic signature beverage.

The Pimm’s Cup is to Wimbledon as the Honey Duece is to the US Open. The primary difference is that the Pimm’s Cup comes from a long history of tradition. The Honey Deuce was concocted more recently with the intention of becoming that tournament’s iconic beverage.

Pimm’s is a British brand of gin-based liqueur. The ingredients and process are a “closely guarded secret.” However, it is widely believed to include caramelized oranges and herbs. At Wimbledon, Pimm’s is used to make a drink known as a fruit cup or a summer cup, which is popular in England. That cocktail consists of a liqueur combined with soda, lemonade, or ginger ale. It is traditionally served in a tall glass. The spirit of the drink is savoring the moment.

Pimm’s is served in enormous quantities at Wimbledon—reportedly over 300,000 glasses are projected to be sold during the tournament this year.

For those who’ve yet to try one—or need a refresher on how to build the perfect version at home—here’s my version:

  • 2 oz Pimm’s No 1 Cup Liqueur
  • 6 oz Ginger Ale
  • Cucumber Slice
  • Orange Slice
  • Mint

Muddle a few mint leaves in the bottom of the cup, and add the cucumber and orange slices. Add the Pimm’s and then the ice. Pour the ginger ale over the ice and rub an additional mint leaf around the rim and add to the top of the cup.

Wimbledon may be winding down, but there’s still time to raise a glass to the grass. Whether you’re watching the finals or just channeling Centre Court vibes from your own backyard, the Pimm’s Cup remains a perfect way to toast the tournament. It’s not just a drink—it’s a tradition.
