The storyline of Season 2, Episode 5 of the Netflix docuseries “Break Point” revolves around Maria Sakkari and Jessica Pegula as they try to break through to winning tournaments rather than repeatedly coming close but falling short. Consequently, over the next few weeks, I will describe the training techniques these two players are glimpsed using on the show.
Why? In early 2023, I had the bright idea to exhaustively examine the incidental fitness training techniques that made brief appearances during scenes of the show “Break Point.” What I thought would be a five or six post endeavor turned into a long and arduous journey. I now project completion by the end of the year, but that is probably underestimated as well. Thank goodness Netflix canceled the show.
I have previously written about the first time I saw Sakkari play a tennis match and wondered if mere mortals could emulate her training to achieve a similar fitness level. The answer to that question was no. A plethora of videos and social media posts of Sakkari in the gym reveal that many of her training techniques are insane. As it turns out, Sakkari is apparently Greek for “please do not try any of this without first consulting your doctor and also make sure you are working with a well-qualified personal trainer.”
Fortunately, the training moves Sakkari performs in this episode are much more approachable than those shown when she was previously featured during season 1. In fact, the one I am writing about today is much more approachable by all tennis players. Sakkari is seen performing a Butterfly Forward Fold, a calming yoga pose that gently stretches the hips, lower back, and inner thighs. This pose helps to release tension, improve flexibility, and encourage relaxation. It’s commonly used in yoga routines to promote mindfulness and inner peace. Sakkari definitely could benefit from that.
The Butterfly Forward Fold is performed by sitting on the floor with bent knees and the feet together in front of the body. Reach forward to grasp your feet or ankles while letting the knees gently fall outward. This leg motion is like a butterfly unfolding its wings. Hinge forward from your hips, bringing the chest with a straight spine toward your feet. Fold as far as feels comfortable without rounding your back. That position is held for several deep breaths. The pose is released by bringing the torso back to the upright position.
The Butterfly Forward Fold is highly beneficial for tennis players, as it helps to improve flexibility and release tension in key muscle groups used during play. This pose enhances mobility by stretching the hips, inner thighs, and lower back, crucial for quick lateral movements on the court. Additionally, the forward fold encourages better posture and can alleviate tightness from repetitive tennis motions like bending, lunging, and sprinting. Incorporating this stretch into your regular fitness routine can promote faster recovery and reduce the risk of injury.
In somewhat related news, I recently decided that given the amount of time I spend on my yoga mat, it was high time for an upgrade. The cheap mats I previously purchased from a big box retail store weren’t cutting it for me anymore.
After reading several reviews and evaluations, I settled on the JadeYoga Harmony Mat. It’s a step up in durability and cushioning from my previous equipment. Additionally, the surface has a lot more grip, which provides stability and is resistant to sliding and wrinkling. I am extremely happy with this upgrade.

Incorporating stretches like the Butterfly Forward Fold into your fitness routine can make a noticeable difference in flexibility, mobility, and injury prevention. Adding this simple yet effective pose can improve the range of motion and reduce muscle tightness, which is essential for fast-paced tennis court movements. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, this stretch is accessible to all fitness levels, making it a great addition to any routine. Give it a try, and experience the benefits firsthand in your game!
