Something I learned from Season 1 of the Netflix docuseries ‘Break Point’ is that Ons Jabeur frequently uses superband resistance loops for her training. Additionally, her specific technique sometimes varies from the textbook descriptions of the exercises she is seen performing on the show. I choose to believe that she has tailored those moves specifically for tennis.

In Episode 7 of Season 1, Jabeur is seen performing a Standing Torso Twist while her husband Karim provides a dynamic anchor point. However, he is standing straight in front of her rather than at her side, which is how this exercise is usually performed. I believe this variation is particularly good for tennis because it mimics the backswing of the racquet path while the visual focus remains forward to track the incoming tennis ball.

The traditional torso twist with a resistance band starts by standing with the feet at shoulder width apart with one shoulder toward the anchor point. Grip the resistance band in both hands while extending the arms straight out from chest height. The torso is rotated away from the anchor point with a brief pause at the point of maximum tension. The arms are then returned to the starting position in a controlled motion. That’s one rep.

The Standing Torso twist gives the obliques a dynamic workout. It can also improve mobility in the hips and lower back. Since Jabeur is performing this exercise immediately before the Wimbledon Finals, it is a sure bet that she is using this move as a part of a dynamic warmup. In a training situation, increased resistance can also build strength and power in those muscles.

Superbands are great for tennis players, as they integrate well with strength training, agility drills, and dynamic warm-up routines that are ubiquitous to the sport. These resistance training devices support functional movement patterns relevant to tennis. They are also lightweight and can be easily carried in a racquet bag.

The number of times Ons Jabeur is seen using superbands in ‘Break Point’ is a testament to how frequently they are used at the professional level. It is an equipment investment that tennis players should consider.
