Donald Dell Fires Shots Across the USTA Bow

Last week on Sport’s Illustrated podcast “Beyond the Baseline,” host Jon Wertheim interviewed Donald Dell. Dell is a former professional player, broadcaster, and agent. He is also a former US Davis Cup Captain and represented Michael Jordan. Dell made a bold statement that caught my attention given my current exploration on growing the game. The context was in attracting young athletes to the sport of tennis.

Community Tennis Associations

As I wrote about yesterday in “Mowing the Grassroots of the USTA House”, I have been thinking a lot about the relationship between the USTA national office, the individual USTA sections, the local USTA Community Tennis Associations (CTAs), and the local league players. Today I want to focus very specifically on the CTAs. I suspect that a lot of players are only vaguely aware of CTAs and the purpose they serve in the USTA ecosystem.

Mowing the Grassroots of the USTA House

The USTA is in the midst of a restructuring effort that has been accelerated due to financial strains brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic. Currently the USTA is re-imagining the structure of the organization to get closer to players at the local level. The restructuring of the USTA was previously covered in “Job Cuts at the USTA.”

I wonder where the 2021 USTA publishing location will be, since the closure of the White Plains office was announced in the interim.

June Introspection: Announcing Some Changes

I just took inventory of my “hot list” for future posts and realized that I have more than a 30 days worth of material. That’s a long time to stay off topic. Just as the USTA is re-imagining how that organization can be structured to better serve the tennis community, I find myself thinking through how to structure this effort into a more coherent flow.

Six Weeks to a Better Level of Tennis: Week 5

I am in the middle of a six week structured improvement program inspired by one of Dennis Ralston’s books, Six Weeks to a Better Level of Tennis. During this time, I am publishing a status update on the effort every Sunday. This week as I reviewed the inventory of all the training activities that I had devised for myself as a part of this project, I came to the realization that I had not touched on the creation and practice of match routines that would directly lead into better footwork patterns.
