Last Tuesday, we discussed a new study that added to the substantial body of research on how mental strategies can be used to improve execution during tennis competition. Neuro Priming for Peak Performance is a guidebook on how to create personalized audio recordings for tennis players to rehearse their mental imagery and positive self-talk. It was written by Frank Giampaolo who is an instructional tennis writer who focuses on coaching excellence.

Tennis is a sport where matches are won off a combination of physical and mental execution. Paradoxically, many adult recreational players neglect the mental aspects of their game. I suspect that it is due to skepticism or perhaps many players have no idea how to just get started. Neuro Priming for Peak Performance is a singular resource that can help players start their own journey toward embracing mental imagery training.

This book is organized into separate chapters for various aspects of tennis development. The first phase is to collect data about what happens during peak execution. That information forms the basis for creating a script that the player can learn and recite on demand. Customized audio recordings are a great way to do that, but I have found that it also works just as well off paper. I use both approaches.

The book is thin, but packed with information that can guide any player through thoughtful creation of a personal mental imagery routine. I highly recommend players perform some semblance of this type of training. Neuro Priming for Peak Performance is a great resource for getting started on exactly that.
