Tennis Technology and Training Tuesday
During this ongoing arctic cold snap, I am sure that a lot of the readers of this site are looking for ways to safely and comfortably play tennis. Among the artifacts that have emerged from the house of the Umpire Who Gave Birth to Me is a commercial device that we called a “Tennis Hot Sock.” I am delighted to discover that this product is still for sale at amazon. It is made by Tourna and marketed as a “Hot Glove.”
Going way back in the day, before the Hot Sock was available for purchase, we would simply cut a racquet handle sized hole in a tube sock. That is a good DIY option in a pinch, but the hole starts to fray over time. Additionally, the tube sock solution doesn’t have a lot of room for making grip changes.
The Hot Sock that turned up in my childhood home was pressed into service over the weekend as the temperatures started to decline. It was actually used on an indoor court. Yes kids, it is really that cold right now. It is astonishing that the elastic is still serviceable. It has to be at least 35 years old.
I carry cold weather gear in a plastic bin in the cargo bay of my car. The Tourna Hot Glove will soon be added to that stash. It is also a safe bet that it will be on the 2021 edition of great stocking stuffers for tennis players. As the current arctic cold snap has shown, everyone eventually needs one.
Editorial note. This post is late this morning because we are completely without power following yesterday’s blizzard. The final edits were made via my mobile phone. Apologies if this is a little rougher around the edges than usual.
