One of the things I love about the opportunity to play tennis at many different facilities is that it exposes me to a wide variety of local tennis cultures. Frequently, that is expressed through signs and banners displayed on site. These can be informative, inspiring, humorous, and sometimes enigmatic. All of those aspects are potentially in play on a banner I came across last spring while playing a non-USTA mixed league match at the T Bar M Racquet Club.

The simple sign contains four words: “Nobody Cares” on the top line directly above “Work Harder” on the second. I strongly suspect this banner is associated with the club’s junior development program because, quite frankly, neither sentiment would be well received in drills or leagues for the club’s adult members.

In this site’s overthinking tradition, I have spent an inordinate amount of time contemplating the meaning of that sign. Rather than trying to track down the origin story of why it was printed and hung, I decided that what was important was what it ultimately said to me.

Tennis is a game of frustration and futility. Even the very best players lose almost half of the points they play. During competition and training, nobody cares that you missed the last shot. Nobody cares why it happened. Nobody cares that you aren’t playing up to your expected standards. Nobody cares, so you shouldn’t call attention to or dwell on it unnecessarily.

What matters is what comes next. A tennis player who just missed a shot or lost a point cannot change that outcome. What they can control is working harder. In competition, that involves bringing a higher level of energy and potentially better strategy to the next point played. In training, that applies to the next ball they are fed.

The phrase “Nobody Cares, Work Harder” powerfully reminds us that the essence of tennis is perseverance and resilience. It’s about focusing on the present moment and putting in the effort required to improve, regardless of the setbacks or challenges faced. This mindset encourages players to take ownership of their game, emphasizing that success isn’t about talent alone but about the dedication and work put into it.

This message has broad implications for everyone who steps onto a tennis court. It is a call to push beyond the comfort zone, strive for personal bests, and enjoy the process of self-improvement. No matter where you are on your tennis journey, there’s always room to work harder and push the limits of what you can achieve.

Moreover, the idea that “nobody cares” is liberating. It removes the pressure of external expectations and shifts the focus inward. It’s not about impressing others or fearing their judgment; it’s about personal growth and finding satisfaction in the effort itself. Rather than being driven by opinions of others, it is more important to develop motivation from within.

At first glance, the banner at the T Bar M Racquet Club might seem enigmatic, blunt, or even harsh. However, the message is clear and profound. In tennis, excuses don’t lead to improvement —effort does. Ultimately, this sign is about resilience, accountability, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

So, the next time you experience frustration on a tennis court, remember this: nobody cares, and that’s a good thing. That thought frees you to focus on what really matters—working harder and getting better, one point at a time.
