This weekend we have been examining how the very best players in Adult/Senior tennis leverage outside perspectives to improve their overall tennis performance level. So far we have checked off working with a coach and using video analysis as two valuable mechanisms for doing that. Today we are rounding out this series by examining why mentorship in tennis can be transformational as players “Seek Outside Perspective” which is one of the 12 Habits of Highly Successful Tennis Players.

A mentor who has played tennis at a high level or has been involved in the sport for a long time can offer valuable insights and advice. This can include the ins and outs of competing at various levels in the tournament or league ecosystem. These players may also have insight into tactics and strategies required to compete in various contexts. They can also share first-hand practical information on overall training and preparation.

A tennis mentor can supplement the recommendations of a coach or provide an alternative perspective. People who play in these top-tier niches frequently have greater insight into what it takes to compete and win at that level. They can provide validation on whether or not a player is on the right track in their current developmental journey and offer advice on course corrections when needed.

Forging connections within the tennis community is essential. A mentor can provide introductions or connections to other people in the tennis ecosystem such as prospective doubles or practice partners. They can also offer advice on which events to play as well as helpful information on where to find resources that could benefit the player.

Finally, a mentor in tennis can provide encouragement and accountability. Tournament tennis in particular is a harsh format in which every competitor except the eventual champion loses their last match. A tennis mentor can pick you up when you are down and serve as a reminder that the essence of tennis competition isn’t the result but rather the performance. Tennis mentors can help less experienced players keep everything in perspective.

If you are looking to engage in a new part of the tennis ecosystem or elevate your game to the next level, a mentor can be an invaluable resource to assist with that journey. A mentor can help improve your game, stay motivated, and succeed in the sport.
