Team USA: Women’s Olympic Tennis Speculation

The tennis players who will be selected to play in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics is expected to be announced by July 5. The protocols and procedures for Olympic qualification are significantly divergent from what is used in professional tennis tournaments. For one thing, the nationality of the players really matters. Additionally there are Olympic rules that are intended to create balanced international participation. For most tennis fans, the process is foreign and mysterious.

2021 Tennis Participation PAC Report

The Physical Activity Council (PAC) issues an annual report tracking sports, fitness, and recreation participation in the United States. The USTA and the Tennis Industry Association (TIA) lean pretty heavily on the 2021 report as the source of good news on tennis participation. In fact it is the go-to “filler” content used in periodic emailed newsletters from both organizations.

Taylor Townsend Speaks Out

Last week women’s professional tennis player Taylor Townsend released an essay titled “You Ain’t Never Been No Little Girl, Taylor Townsend” on The Players’ Tribune. It is a powerful account of her personal journey in tennis. The essay also provides some insight into the machinations of the USTA Player Development Program when Townsend was a rising junior. It also reflects less than positively on the culture of the USTA encapsulated by the Player Development Program.

USTA Announces League Referral Program

The USTA blasted out a message to its membership Friday advertising a new league player referral program. Since I have been harping on the data management of the USTA all weekend, I will observe that there are USTA members in my orbit who miss this notice because the organization does not have their current email address. The message announcing the new referral program carried a link where a person may update their email address. It is a mystery to me how a person who did not receive the email can make use of that opportunity, but at least the USTA is trying.

Michele Krause and Cardio Tennis

The USTA recently announced that they have retained Michele Krause, to help grow Cardio Tennis® in the United States. Krause is exactly the right person to hire for that initiative as she is the founder of the Cardio Tennis program. In her new association with the USTA, Krause and her consulting company will lead efforts in the development of a national Cardio Tennis strategy for promotion, education, training, and implementation. This is very good news.

USTA Launches Rally for the Future Fundraising Campaign

In 2020 this site donated the proceeds from this site to the USTA “Rally to Rebuild” initiative which was sponsored by the USTA Foundation. Last week USTA members received an email from Chris Evert announcing the follow-on to that campaign, “Rally for the Future.” Both benefit the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network. The NJTL is an in-school tennis and education program targeted at under-resourced youth across the country.

The USTA Tennis Champions Initiative

Last Monday this site published “Celebrate #NationalTennisMonth by Becoming an Ambassador to the Sport.” The gist of that post is that individuals in the tennis community need to step up to promote tennis in their communities because the USTA apparently wasn’t going to do it. Two days later, the USTA sourced “Baseline Tennis” newsletter contained a blurb announcing a USTA initiative for “Tennis Champions” to promote tennis in their communities. It is a great idea, if I say so myself.

Overthinking a recent USTA Social Media Survey #NationalTennisMonth

Last week the USTA Official Facebook page shared a link with a survey targeting tennis players in the 18-39 age demographic. Discussion on Facebook was spirited… and mostly from people who were over 40 who were miffed at being excluded. According to the Facebook request, “The USTA is conducting a focus group to better understand what, how, and when tennis players in this demographic want to play.” As my family consistently reminds me, I passed 40 a very long time ago. However, in the true Fiend at Court spirit, I have some thoughts. Let’s regard this as my focus group of 1.

May is #NationalTennisMonth

The USTA sent an email late last week promoting May as #NationalTennisMonth. That message did not go out to all USTA members and the best guess is that it was directed toward tennis service providers. In fact, the links in the message are to a “Marketing Generator” that tennis service providers can use. The marketing generator is basically a set of templates for the USTA Net Generation program. A service provider can edit these templates to add their own logo and facility information. The finished products are available for download which means that it is up to the service providers to contract printing services.
