Every Wednesday this site considers a rule from the ITF Rules of Tennis as published by the USTA Friend at Court. We are currently in the midst of a sequential march through the rules. Currently we are in Section 29, “Continuous Play.” Today’s topic is the Set Break.
I rarely sit down when I play tennis. I have found that for me, any benefits of rest from sitting are negated by the fact that if I stop moving I tend to stiffen up. Besides, it it embarrassing when I have to ask my opponent for help getting back up.
It is hard for me to imagine that this news would have escaped the narrow niche of tennis enthusiasts who follow this site, but just in case, there was a fairly significant story line that emerged from the US Open last week. Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the tournament after hitting a ball in anger that injured a court official.

Last week in “Skipping Forward in the Interest of Continuous Play” we discussed that the time limit between points in the official rules of tennis is 25 seconds. There is a USTA comment on this rule that establishes one pretty significant exception.
Technically the next section up in our steady march through the ITF Rules of Tennis as Published in the USTA Friend at Court is “Role of Court Officials.” That section consists of a single rule which points to the Appendix which contains all the bureaucratic details of court officials. I am going to exercise creative license and defer discussion of that topic until I reach that point in the Appendices.
Last week I promised that we had concluded coverage of the “Correcting Errors” section of the ITF Rules of Tennis as printed in the USTA Friend at Court. However, in the interim, I observed an umpire failing to change the balls during a match during the Western and Southern Open. This is the first time I have ever witnessed this kind of error in a match. It made me ridiculously happy.
We did it! Well… almost. Today marks the final rule documented in Section 27 of the ITF Rules of Tennis as published by the USTA Friend at Court. I feel like this is cause for celebration. For the most part, the “Correcting Errors section has been a mind bending exercise for me. The mental trauma of struggling to understand how some of the errors could even occur, coupled with corrections that did not always seem equitable has taken a toll on me.
Tie-breaker in lieu of a full third set has recently become the more common match format at Adult NTRP tournaments. As a result, many of my tournaments singles matches start with the umpire reminding us of that fact. I almost always make the joke that there is very little chance that I will accidentally play a third set of singles.
I finally catch a break in my slog through the “Correcting Errors” section of the ITF Rules of Tennis as published in the USTA Friend at Court. I have been struggling through horror after horror in this section. In previous weeks we have discussed errors that I am quite frankly challenged to understand how they could occur. Additionally, some of the recent corrections don’t always seem to be equitable to me. Today’s rules are a welcome respite.
I am continuing to encounter horror after horror in the “Correcting Errors” section of the ITF Rules of Tennis as published in the USTA Friend at Court. My only consolation is that after today there are only four additional subsections of this rule to cover. This section will all be over by Labor Day.
